It all began with an inspired vision by 95-year old inventor-engineer-entrepreneur Leonard Phillips. He saw the need for an inexpensive, portable toilet and charged his son Bill to “go and DO something with this product!” Bill seized that vision and spent a year or two refining it before officially incorporating Phillips Environmental Products, Inc. in 1999. The goal was to produce a convenient, dignified and safe portable dry toilet system for use when plumbing is unavailable. Joining him in that launch were his business-savvy spouse, Pam Phillips, plastics consultant Mike Groff, and former Pres/CEO Mike Hetherington.
The primary target market was for use in natural disasters, but after engineering the PETT® toilet - now the GO anywhere portable toilet® - they found more immediate success in the outdoor retail market and with the Department of Defense. Emergency-disaster relief agencies followed as well as our rapidly growing healthcare market, and various industrial, mining, utilities, transportation and mass-market retail clients.
In the early years, the patented GO anywhere portable toilet became an icon for the company. Today, its accompanying line of disposable GO anywhere toilet kits® - formerly WAG BAG®s - is recognized by users worldwide. GO anywhere toilet kits are pre-loaded with the company’s proprietary blend of super-absorbent gelling agents, decay catalysts, and deodorizers – otherwise known as Poo Powder®. The company’s expanding product line-up also includes Sani-Bag+® commode / bedpan liners, on-the-‘go’ and disposable Pee-Wee® unisex urine bags, a privacy shelter, and custom-designed backpack. GO anywhere toilet kits, GO anywhere portable toilet, Sani-Bag+, Pee-Wee and Poo Powder are all manufactured in the USA.
The toilet kits and packaging are, and always have been, disposable in normal trash. They are even required in a variety of sensitive global settings including Mt. Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu, Mt. Whitney and other notable outdoor venues, and have also been used on Mt. Everest. The company is a proud corporate partner of the “Leave No Trace®” movement. To-date, the company has sold over 16 million toilet kits to clients in the United States and other countries.
Waste kits are manufactured in Montana at Cleanwaste’s automated facility, supplemented by a cadre of dedicated home-assemblers and several non-profit organizations. These work partners play a key role in company success.
Operations have expanded three times from the initial humble facility in Bozeman, Montana, which is nestled amidst three surrounding mountain ranges, located 90 miles north of Yellowstone National Park. In 2010 the company relocated eight miles down the road to its current campus in Belgrade, Montana.
Growing from an initial staff of three, the company today has a team of 15 dedicated employees and home assemblers and is governed by its board of directors.
